Unit 1: Chili's

I chose to use Chili's as my focus of the public space topic. This was appealing to me because I find myself spending a lot of time there anyway. I tend to go there often with a friend of mine during football season to watch the game and have a drink. Another reason I chose it, outside of familiarity, is that there is a lot going on inside, meaning lots of different things to view and use as it's argument for it's service and it's target clientele.

So far I have been there to take notes on two different occasions. The first was on a Thursday night and the second was over Sunday lunch. It was interesting to see that what I expected was not necessarily the arguments that Chili's was making upon studying the actual restaurant. I expected to find a single/college-aged crowd, an established theme, and Mexican feeling decor. What I am finding is more of a southwest flair paired with a lot of young families and no real set theme.

I do feel like their target audience is what I initially said, the single, college-aged crowd, but that it tends to draw in others by it's location and it's prices. The young families that were there at the times that I made it may have been included in Chili's target audience as well. So it may be helpful to say that the target audience is young twenties ranging to early thirties.

Some of the preconceived notions that I have are already taking a back burner with my two visits, but I am trying to write down my knee-jerk reactions and then analyze if they came from me or the actual restaurant when I go back through them. Hopefully I don't get too much in the way of myself making good observations.

... PS something is going screwy with my formatting. Please forgive me

  1. I think I restaurant will be a great place to observe. Good choice. Too bad foot ball season is coming to an end. Wow good job on observing twice already I have only gone once to my place. What do you mean by southwest flair? I am from the south west and I find it interesting to hear many different interpretations of the southwest. Have you happened to notice the food they order? That might have a good appeal to it or you may find a few arguments worthwhile.
I enjoy Chili's but I’d have to say it’s not my favorite restaurant. Wait is it a restaurant? Ya, I know it is but it’s not like a nice one or a dumpy one… maybe that has an argument in its self the type of restaurant it is… fast… nice… and easy not sure but ya maybe think about it. Back to my personal opinion on Chilis Usually when I go I most likely get a dessert. I love the brownie sunday cookie thing. I haven’t been for a while but I think I just might go soon. Yummy! Any who great post here I think you will find many things to observe and think about while you observe.

  2. Chili's is definitely a good place to do your observations. They have so many things on the walls like the pictures and their little chalkboards they draw on. What kind of arguments are those making? Also maybe you could observe the waiters and take note of the different recommendations they make or how they might treat different age groups while they serve them. Anyways, good idea and good luck!

I agree with Jenna, you should observe the many different designs they have on the wall and also observe the different waiters. See whaat simialrities and differences they all have within their personalities. Good luck on you assignment.

  4. Lauren,
You've chosen an interesting space for analysis. And your classmates have given you a lot of helpful advice. Since Chili's is a national chain, you may consider analyzing the unique aspects of your particular Chili's vs. other typical national locations.
